Davos Protesters Unveil their ‘Weapons’

THREE TOPLESS Ukrainian protesters were detained on Saturday while trying to break into an invitation-only gathering of international CEOs and political leaders to call attention to the needs of the world’s poor. With temperatures around freezing in the snow-filled town, the girls took off their tops and climbed a fence before being detained.

Davos police spokesman Thomas Hobi said the three women were taken to the police station and their papers were checked. The activists are from the group Femen, which has become popular in Ukraine for staging half-naked protests to highlight a range of issues including oppression of political opposition…

Note: Watch the police: A man’s natural instinct would be to protect a vulnerable, half-naked woman in a dangerous situation, so these young policemen must have found it confusing when the feisty girls started throwing punches. Perhaps the heavy handling of this ‘incident’—which in reality posed no threat to anyone—might have encouraged one or two of these boys to consider the validity of the girl’s cause, and even whether they themselves are ultimately on the wrong side of the argument.

Also, given the inevitable frisson of sexual excitement and confusion of all that gratuitous groping, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that the police debriefing was longer than usual, with more than a little psychotherapy offered..!

FEMEN is a Ukrainian protest group based in Kiev, founded in 2008. The organisation became internationally known for organizing topless protests against sex tourists, international marriage agencies, sexism and other social, national and international ills. They say:

“Our God is woman, our mission is protest, our weapons are bare breasts.”
